Special Projects

Summertime sleep-ins are officially over. Now it’s time to get up, get dressed and go to school. So as a public service, five students at the Harriet Tubman Charter School in the Bronx shared their secrets to success for getting to school on time:

Ayla Lewis, first grade: She suggests getting a gentle wake-up call from Mommy at 6 a.m. She follows that with a relaxing episode of the cartoon, “Dora the Explorer.”

Kaylah Bezell, third grade: Have a butter roll and a Sunny Delight.

Jahiem Cornelius, third grade: Routine, routine, routine. He showers before bed, wakes up and goes to the bathroom, and dresses. He then brushes his teeth and polishes off a bowl of Froot Loops. His father reminds him to wash his face.

Myracle Robertson, third grade: Her mother, Cynthia, says that Myracle does not like breakfast so she eats “a little bit of applesauce” to give her something to put in her stomach and calm her nerves.

Samir Escoto, kindergarten: He subscribes to the simple yet classic routine of sleeping, then waking up, then going back to sleep for a while. That is, as long as it gives him enough time to gel his Mohawk.
