The museum store, tucked in the back of the Metro-North terminal at Grand Central, attracts its fair share of people who revel in mass transit nostalgia. But it also attracts little boys who pore over bins of track pieces, trying to construct the tracks of their dreams. And tourists who enjoy the novelty of the city’s transportation infrastructure.

As a 4-year-old New Yorker, Benjamin Kabak stood mesmerized at the front of the No. 2 train, his nose pressed to the window. His father stood at his side. The underground lights in the tunnel — green, blue and yellow — blurred as the train lapped the miles, speeding from one stop to the next. It was the beginning of Kabak’s lifetime passion for the subway.
